This week I’m in Cambodia and it is a total surprise. Like most Asian countries, Cambodians are intrinsically ‘green’ in their daily lives, so there is a fair amount of biodegradable products around. While I am mostly in Siem Reap, which is small town near the Angkor Wat Temples; it gives me a good insight into Cambodian life.

Most of the people who live here, are rice farmers and in addition to growing rice they also grow their own vegetables and fish in one of the three large lakes in Siem Reap. They hardly use any pesticides or fertilizers in their cultivation, so their diet is mostly organic and fresh.

Much like in other parts of Asia – general packaging material is made of all-natural products. Their most famous dish called amok is steamed in a banana leaf cup and usually eaten straight out of it. They also have a street snack made with sticky rice stuffed with plantain, wrapped with banana leaf and roasted – the leaf not only acts as flavour but also biodegradable packaging.

I also saw excellent quality Cambodian silk for sale which is hand-spun and dyed with organic dyes. I bought a couple of paintings from a women’s co-op here and they came wrapped with a rattan tube which again is hand-woven and biodegradable. There is no end to the innovative use of natural materials not just in Cambodia but also in the rest of Asia.

The Cambodians are skilled artisans and anyone who has visited here, will know this. However, a lot of their craft-work is wood based with leads to deforestation. Cambodia has one of the largest rates of deforestation mostly in part due to subsistence use for firewood etc but the high-quality wood is also illegally logged for export.

Although the town of Siem Reap has a fair amount of forest cover, the rapid development to support the tourism industry is putting strains on its natural resources. Ethical consumerism within places like Cambodia is easy enough because a lot of the arts and crafts are hand-made by artisans. The biggest impact as a tourist visiting Cambodia is the place you choose to stay in.

A number of hotels, guest-houses etc have come up to accommodate tourists and agricultural land is being converted into these developments. The people here have a better quality of life than other parts of Cambodia but with growing environmental degradation, it is only a matter of time before that is affected. In the face of abject general poverty in Cambodia, only talking about environmental awareness is not going to solve the pressing socio-enviro problems.

Angkor Wat is Part of What Makes Tourism the 1 Industry in Cambodia

As we flew into Siem Reap, Cambodia, our tour guide prepared us for the dramatic differences between Cambodia and Viet Nam. In Viet Nam, you see economic progress everywhere, new buildings going up, hustle and bustle in the shops and its cities are bursting with energy. In Cambodia, not so much.

There is a lot of poverty in Siem Reap, and much of it is surrounded by hotels. Tourism is the number one industry. The average salary in Siem Reap is $2 a day but tourists can easily drop $500 a night at a hotel. Hotels are ubiquitous. The currency in Cambodia is the Riel, but it’s practically worthless. That’s why whenever we received change from anybody it was in new bills. Nobody uses it. The U.S. dollar is accepted everywhere.

The food we were served was very similar to the food in Viet Nam except even more watered down for the tourists. I asked for a bowl of diced hot peppers, and that’s probably what made me sick. I lasted all of 2 days before hitting the bed and staying there.

I did manage to pull my head up and get into a tuk-tuk (a carriage attached to a motor bike) with my husband to do a fast tour of Angkor Wat, because for some reason, it was scheduled for day 3 of our tour instead of day one.

We had a guide in Siem Reap, too, who was delightful, Mr. Ing. You know how some people can take a boring subject and make it interesting, while other people can take an interesting subject and make it boring? We had a tour guide in Hoi An who ended every sentence with “yeah.” She barked orders at us like a drill sergeant. She was also very difficult to understand and demanded that we listen to her long boring stories about facts that were probably very interesting but it was lost on me. Mr. Ing made the stories about the temples in Siem Reap fascinating. Except I was too sick to pay attention.

Here is a photo of the Ta Prohm Temple. Many of these temple ruins are located in dense jungle that had been cleared out by early archaeologists. This temple was built in 1186. In the photo below, you can see the tree roots of the Kymer Spoong tree with the wandering tendrils of the charay. It is a vast complex with 39 towers which, over the years, has been heavily looted.

At the Preahko Temple, I shot this photo of a lizard. Most of the lizards we saw were smooth-skinned but this one was similar to gecko. I mean, look at it’s feet.

I believe this child was a tourist at the temple ruins. I did not shoot photos of the kids who were begging and selling trinkets because they would not leave me alone if I did. At the Ta Prohm Temple, they have the system down pat. You might not notice when you enter the temple grounds, but the kids take a photo of you. By the time you reach the other side, they have developed the photo and glued it to a plate, which they then try to sell for $5.

One of the kids asked me if I was from Australia. He then guessed Britain. Maybe because I wasn’t speaking to him. I swear, they are relentless. When he finally guessed America, which was about #10 on his list, he then rattled off the name of our president, Obama’s daughters, Obama’s dog’s name (which even I don’t know), said Rhode Island was our smallest state and knew when Hawaii was admitted to the Union. He had gleaned this information from other tourists.

I asked him why he wasn’t in school. He said it’s a holy day. Yeah, well, what day is today? What day of the week? What is the name of this holy day? He didn’t have answers for any of that. I suspect every day is a holy day for this kid.

We saw several performances of Aspara dancers in Cambodia. Note how far back the fingers are extended. They flex their fingers for years to get them to move in that direction. Toes, too. This dance below was about the lotus flower. Each hand movement has meaning. The Aspara dancers do not smile and do not sing, but there is music as their story unfolds through slow and calculated movement.

Angkor Wat is the granddaddy of the temple ruins in Cambodia, built in the 12th Century to honor the Hindu god Vishnu. It is also depicted on the Cambodian flag because it’s a national treasure. I was too sick to see much of this temple, but I did walk down a long exterior wall filled with carvings that depicted heaven above, earth in the center and hell below. The hell portion showed men being eaten by large animals and tortured. It was a lot more interesting than the heaven portion.

When a site is awarded World Heritage status, it usually means a jump in tourism visits and revenue. Not so with Preah Vihear, where the conflict over the surrounding area between Thailand and Cambodia have caused much economic hardship to the residents of the area.

Adventures in Angkor – Siem Reap

I missed last week’s installment of Adventures at Angkor… oops! This last installment isn’t so much on Angkor, but on the modern town of Siem Reap, which is where you’d want to go if you want to visit the temples. It’s a small, bustling town – bustling from the massive tourist boom it has experienced since the late 1990s, and even in the off-peak tourist season the town still hums with excitement.

This section of town you are seeing in these pictures is called the Old Town, the heart of Siem Reap. It still contains many of the shops and watering holes that draw in the tourist dollars. Food and drink here are relatively cheap – although not cheap compared to the native Cambodians, who I suspect less than half of what a tourist would normally pay on a menu.

Souvenir shops like these are ubiquitous in the old market, a square block of shops selling everything the tourist needs by way of a souvenir – bags, hats, small statues, t-shirts, fridge magnets, postcards, etc. A tourist trap, to be sure. So make sure to haggle in these types of shops!

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

The ancient capital of the Khmer kingdom, Angkor is the most popular destination in Cambodia. Stretching over some 400 sq km, including forests and jungles, Angkor Archaeological Park contains remains of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th century.

Explore Angkor Wat (believed to be the largest religious structure in the world) and the city’s other ancient towers and temples. The nearby town of Siem Reap offers a number of hotels, restaurants and transportation to Angkor.

Easter Island, Chile

Easter Island, located in the South Pacific between Chile and Tahiti, is one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world. Its name “Easter Island” derives from its rediscovery by a Dutch explorer on Easter Sunday in 1722.

Formed out of an ancient volcanic eruption, the triangular-shaped island covers only 103 kilometers (64 square miles). It is famous for its 800 or so ancient Polynesian statues that stand across the island. Exactly why and how the original inhabitants — referred to as Rapa Nui — assembled these ancient wonders is not fully understood (partly because their written language has yet to be deciphered). It is thought the Rapu Nui people arrived from Polynesia around 400 AD.

Jerusalem, Israel

Located in the Judean Mountains, between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern tip of the Dead Sea, Jerusalem has a history that goes back to the 4th millennium BC, making it one of the oldest cities in the world.

Jerusalem is considered holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam – making it sacred to more than a third of the world’s population. Key religious sites include the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque. The old walled city, a World Heritage site, has been traditionally divided into four quarters, although the names used today — the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters — were introduced in the early 19th century.

But Jerusalem’s appeal is certainly not limited to religious travelers. With its rich history, archeological treasures, museums and concerts, Jerusalem is a popular destination for religious and non-religious travelers alike.

Chichen Itza, Mexico

Chichén Itzá is the largest of the ruined Mayan cities on the Yucatán Peninsula. It is believed that the construction of the first temples (dedicated to the rain god Chac) began in the 7th century — and the city reached its peak under the rule of the Itzáes in the 10th century.

In the following centuries, Chichén Itzá became the most powerful city in the Yucatan. Most of the grand architecture was built during this age, in a mixture of Maya and Toltec styles. At the end of the 12th century, the city was captured by rival city Mayapán, but it remained a place of pilgrimage for the Maya until the 16th century.

The structures of Chichén Itzá were overgrown with jungle and slowly decayed until major archaeological excavations began in the 1920s.

Avila, Spain

Ávila is a medieval city in the province of Castile-Léon, about 113 kilometers (70 miles) northwest of Madrid. Founded in the 11th century to protect Spanish territories from the Moors, Ávila enjoys an authentic medieval atmosphere with its magnificently preserved city wall, historic cathedral, and a number of Romanesque churches. The old town of Ávila has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Ávila is important to pilgrims because of its association with the mystic and reformer St. Teresa of Ávila. Teresa, a 16th-century Carmelite nun, reformed her order, had many ecstatic visions, and wrote several books. She is the female patron saint of Spain and was the first woman to be named a Doctor of the Church. Shrines erected in her honour include Convento de Santa Teresa, a 17th-century convent built over the site of Teresa’s birth, and the Monasterio de la Encarnacion, where she lived.

Parthenon, Athens, Greece

The Parthenon, which has stood atop the Acropolis of Athens for nearly 2,500 years, is the most famous surviving building of Ancient Greece and one of the most famous buildings in the world.

It was built to give thanks to Athena, the city’s patron goddess, for protecting Athens and Greece in the Persian Wars. Throughout its long life, the Parthenon has functioned most importantly as a Greek temple, but has also been a treasury, a fortress, a church, and a mosque.

Lourdes, France

Located in the Hautes-Pyrénées département in southwest France, Lourdes is the largest Catholic pilgrimage destination in France and one of the most popular Catholic shrines in the world.

The small town (population 17,000) receives more than 5 million visitors each year thanks to visions of the Virgin Mary reported by a young girl named Bernadette in 1858.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes includes 52 hectares of property and 22 places of worship, including a sacred grotto, two basilicas, and a variety of buildings for pilgrims and the sick. Outside the sanctuary, many pilgrims also visit the home of the young visionary, St. Bernadette.

The Great Sphinx, Egypt

Built in about 2530 BC by the pharaoh Khafre, the Great Sphinx is a colossal stone statue located next to the Pyramids of Giza. Carved out of limestone, the Sphinx has the facial features of a man and the body of a recumbent lion. To give you an idea of its impressive size: it is approximately 73 meters (240 feet) long and 20 meters (66 feet) high.

Primarily, the Sphinx was thought to have been a guardian figure, protecting the tomb of the Khafre by warding off evil spirits. It was also considered an oracle of sorts: within the structure’s paw is a 15th-century BC stone tablet recounting a vision given to a prince who slept in the shadow of the Sphinx (and perhaps sought its divine aid). It is believed he later became a pharaoh through its intercession.

A number of mysteries continue to surround the Sphinx, such as why the builders chose such heavy blocks for the temple or how they were able to move them. There is also some question about when the Sphinx was actually constructed, with many theorizing it was constructed as early as 7000 BC.

PRASAT PREAH VIHEAR

In the 6th century , king Yasovarmamn I ( 889-900) began work on the original dedicated to Shisa as result of spiritual development, increased political prestige and economic growth was naturally reflected in the Temple undergoing more than 300 years of consultation with deal of remodeling under subsequent King Suryavarman II ( 1113 – 1150) this increased prestige naturally changed the original small sanctuary into one of the greatest Khmer temples of all times. This ranking was the result of the finest in situ carving that depicted the highest standards of unique Khmer architecture.

Under the Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1904 and 1907, the line of frontier between Cambodia and Thai along the Dongrak Mountains followed justice at the Hague officially found that the Preah Vihear Temple situated inside the Cambodia territory.

Location

Preah Vihear Temple is located in a pleasant environment with an attractive countryside slightly east of the mid section of the Dongrek Mountains.

It is perched on the edge of a giant cliff, about 625 meters above sea level in Preah Vihear Province, Northern part of Cambodia, 625km from the capital city of Phnom Penh. It is also situated close to the Cambodia-Thai border.

What can seen in Preah Vihear Temple

The temple has four levels and four courtyards which comprise of five Gopuras ( entrance pavilions some times surmounted by tower )

Palace Building or Gopuras on the third level.

This group of building was the King’s residence when he came to pay homage to the mighty God , and the two wings were the shelters for the pilgrims. The main temple are used for the high-ranking supreme divinities, this mighty group of building is considered as the center of the whole temple complex.

The front stone stairway : this main passage is on the North side. The stairway is 8 meters wide and 78 meters long,. The fist flight has 162 steps. At the first landing is a large stone singa statue on stone block. Another 54 flight of steps 4 meters wide and 27 meters long leads up to the second landing also decorated with stone signa statue.

The Nagaraj Courtyard : this stone-paved is 7 meters wide by 31.8 meters long. From here the stairway leads up to the first-level Gropura. The Stairheads are in the form of seven-headed snakes called "Ngu Suang " facing North towards the Prasat. The heads and tails of nagas on both sides look like ordinary snakes, characterizing and early example of this type of animal figures. The head portion of the naga on the west side looks very impressive because it is made from a single solid stone.

The first level Gopura : this is a pavilion in Greek architecture style with cross plan on an elevated, rebates angle base on each of the roof doorway . Stone lions are placed on each of the roofs dooeway.

Accessibility to the Temple

The temple can be reached by crossing the Cambodia-Thai gateway border from the Ubon Ratchantani Province of Thailand. Currently the visits are from 8.00 till 16.00 hours.

The Grandeur of its site

For all the grandeur of its site, perched on the edge of a giant cliff and with a commanding view over northern Cambodia, Preah Vihear is difficult to visualize as a whole. The experience is truly a memorable one – the series of ascents over the best part of a kilometer, the ornate Gopuras and the wealth of decorative detail truly staggers one’s imagination.

I have a good friend from Singapore who is on a visit and yesterday we went to see how Khmer pottery and ceramics are made. The little workshop and retail outlet, called Khmer Ceramics is on the way to Siem Reap's airport and is run by a friendly couple, a Belgian man, Serge, and his Cambodian wife.

When you visit, a Cambodian guide will explain how Cambodian ceramics are made. The process starts with 3 different types of clay: red, white and yellow. After moulding the clay on a wheel, it is fired in a modern, gas-powered kiln from 850 to over a thousand degrees. There is also a replica of a traditional kiln on the site. Coloured glazing is sometimes added to the clay and the colouring is made from natural materials like rice husks and iron. The result is blue, green, or red ceramics.

Ceramic plates have been ordered by restaurants and small containers are used in hotels to hold shampoo etc. There are also larger pieces, one vase had Khmer writing all around, which was beautiful. You can get gifts for as little as a dollar. I also spotted a vase for USD250.

There was a group of small French children who were learning from an Irishman, himself a teacher of ceramics in Ireland. There was also another customer--the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong. Meeting him deserves an entry in itself.

Feeding Siem Reap's rubbish collecting children

Thursday 10 June marked the day Mavis' Touch A Life (TAL) food programme opened at her house near Wat Po Lanka. Previously Mavis would cook food and deliver to residents at the very poor Mondul 3 district. She has since rented a house, for people to drop in for meals, so providing a soup-kitchen like service.

They were up since 6am to buy and prepare the food. The "ait-jai" children (rubbish collectors) around the area had been told to come today at noon. They were waiting outside the gate at 11. The children must have been hungry! Mavis' landlord is such a good guy and obviously believes in what she is doing. His whole family came to help out with the cooking.

The meals are vegetarian, with protein from eggs and toufu. The fried eggs with long beans would turn out to be a hit with the children!

Not so the morning glory fried with garlic, fish sauce, sugar and salt. Later, Kagna explained to me for poor people in Cambodia, morning glory (or kangkong as we call it in Singapore and Malaysia) is a staple dish because it is so cheap (500 riels to 1000 riels a kg). So that's why the children didn't eat it - they were probably sick of it! A lesson for us - no more tro-kun in the future!

There was also vegetable soup, with carrots, winter melon, potatoes and onions, flavoured with vegetable seasoning and salt. Some of the children really liked the soup - but no one liked the onions! Here is my father (he's here for a visit) helping to scoop soup into individual bowls for the children.

The children who were waiting outside are finally allowed in at noon. But what are they doing?

Washing their hands! Mavis would like them to learn and practise good hygiene habits and has provided clean water and soap.

A feast! A total of 17 kids turned up. Not bad for the first day! We told the children to spread the word. TAL hopes to provide meals for the ait-jai adults as well.

This boy is just 8 years old and is forced to collect rubbish. A warm meal at lunch time is much appreciated. Sometimes they get packed food from home which turns cold by the lunch time. Mostly, they will have to fend for themselves, perhaps buying snacks - so long as they bring home the amount of expected money every day.

This cute girl is the youngest of the lot - only 6 years old, wearing an over-sized T-shirt. She was so happy. The kids are so sweet and incredibly polite and helpful. Mavis says the children in our countries are different, not as sweet and obedient. I guess children in developed countries are used to having it easy and can be spoilt.

This 12 year old boy has barely finished swallowing his food and is going for seconds! He was so hungry. He ate the most!

After eating the children help clean up - they wash their individual plates, first in a bucket of rice water with dish washing liquid added (it is amazing - the rice water really helps remove grease!).

The second pail is clean water which they dip the plates in, and then finally in a third pail.

The weather is so hot, some of the boys took the opportunity to have a cool shower!

If you’re walking around the island of Bali, don’t be surprised if a woman walks toward you with a pile of batik prints on her head and tries to sell you one. If you walk into a street market, vendors will run their fingers along the brightly colored threads and call out to you. It’s hard to escape Bali without some batiks in your luggage, but then, why would you want to? Fabrics are dipped in melted wax and then into colorful dyes, resulting in unique and vibrant clothing.

Picturesque baray opposite the east entrance of Banteay Kdei. Originally constructed by the same architect that built Pre Rup. Remodeled in the 12th century as part of Jayavarman VII's massive building campaign. A multi-tiered landing platform on the west edge of the baray is adorned with naga balustrades and guardian lions. The very sparse remains of an island temple can be seen poking out of the middle of the lake during the dry season when the water is low. Srah Srang offers a pleasant, much less touristed sunrise alternative to Angkor Wat.

Twelve nearly identical laterite and sandstone towers that stand opposite and parallel to the Terrace of the Elephants. The artistic and architectural style of the towers is somewhat unique, defying easy classification and dating. Construction may have begun under Jayavarman VII, but the towers do not display the classic Bayon-style characteristics. It has been argued that they may be post-Bayon or perhaps much earlier, as early the 11th century. The original function of the towers is a matter of debate but in the 13th century classic, "Customs of Cambodia," Chinese emissary to Angkor, Zhou Daguan, gives a romantic but dubious first hand account of their function. He wrote that the towers were used to settle legal disputes and matters of criminal justice. The belligerent parties were kept in the towers for a few days. The one to emerge in ill health was declared the loser, guilty by divine decree. Best photographed in the late afternoon.

Banteay Srey loosely translates to ‘citadel of the women,’ but this is a modern appellation that probably refers to the delicate beauty of the carvings. Built at a time when the Khmer Empire was gaining significant power and territory, the temple was constructed by a Brahmin counselor under a powerful king, Rajendravarman and later under Jayavarman V. Banteay Srey displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art. The walls are densely covered with some of the most beautiful, deep and intricate carvings of any Angkorian temple. The temple's relatively small size, pink sandstone construction and ornate design give it a fairyland ambiance. The colors are best before 10:30 AM and after 2:00 PM, but there are fewer tourists in the afternoon. This temple was discovered by French archaeologists relatively late, in 1914. The temple area closes at 5:00 PM. Banteay Srey lies 38 km from Siem Reap, requiring extra travel time. Drivers usually charge a fee in addition to their normal daily charge for the trip. Banteay Srey is well worth the extra effort. Combine a visit to Banteay Srey with Banteay Samre.

Banteay Kdei Temple

Sprawling, largely unrestored, monastic complex in much the same style as Ta Prum. It was originally constructed over the site of an earlier temple, and functioned as a Buddhist monastery under Jayavarman VII. As with other works of Jayavarman VII's era, it is a tightly packed architectural muddle, which like Bayon, suffered from several changes in the plans at the time of construction. It was also built using an interior grade of sandstone and using poor construction techniques, leading to much of the deterioration visible today. A restoration project is underway on many of the towers and corridors, and some areas are blocked off. The foundation stele of the temple has not been found so there is no record of to whom it is dedicated. Barays

A baray is a water reservoir – an area of land where dikes have been raised tobaray catch and hold water. Angkorian kings built massive barays, and such projects became one of the marks of Angkorian kingship. At the center of each barays is and island temple. The first major baray to be constructed (Indratataka), measuring 3.8km x 880m, was completed in 889AD when the capital was still at Hariharalaya near Roluos.

Lolei sat on an island in the middle. Construction of the second major baray (i.e. the East Baray or Yashodharatataka), began almost immediately after the first. At 7.8km x 880m it was almost five times larger than the indratataka. Almost 50 years later, East Mebon was constructed on an island in the center.

The third and largest (8km x 2.2km) is the west Baray built in the early 11th century. West Mebon sits on a central artificial island. The last baray (Jayatataka) was constructed by Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. It is considered to be the baray of Preah Khan Through the unique temple, Neak Pean, sites at the center.

The function of barays is a matter of academic debate. A recent study has asserted that the barays did not serve an agricultural purpose but were built and maintained for political/religious reasons.

More conventional wisdom has it that the barays were part of a giant water works used to irrigate the rice paddies and provide water for year round cultivation, though they certainly served a political and religious function as well.

Ek Phnom Temple

Ek Phnom was built in the 11th century as a Hindu temple by King Suryavarman I. It is located in Tkov village in Peam Ek commune, about 14 kilometres from Battambong town.

The temple consists of prasats on a platform with some carvings in good condition, but Ek Phnom pagoda is a modern pagoda. It has one of the most complete collections of Buddhist wall and ceiling paintings in all Cambodia. There are 18 bodhi trees around the temple. Outside the temple to the south, you will see a moat that is now a pond.

Along the road that takes you from Batambang city to Ek Phnom, you will pass through some outstanding scenic countryside.

Kravan Temple

Kravan, the cardamom. The exact original name of the temple is not known. Local people call this temple Kravan because there are many Kravan flowers growing nearby. Temple is aromatic flower whose petals are similar to but smaller then, Romdul, temple is located east of Angkor Wat and south of Banteay Kdei.

The temple was built in 921 during the reign of King Harshavarman I43 (AD 910-923), dedicated to Vishnu Brahmanism. It may have been built in high court officials. Although this temple look small and somewhat undistinguished from the outside, it contains some remarkable brick sculptures on its interior walls which stand alone as unique example in Khmer art.

The interior of two of the five tower has sculptures depicting Vishnu and his consort, Lakshmi, the scene is the central tower is the most impressive, but both are exceptional in statue and quality of workmanship.

The five brick towers are in a row on one platform which is decorate with carved, sandstone, lintels and columns. All the tower open to the east.

Bakong Temple

Roluos Group: The most impressive member of the Roluos Group, sitting at the center of the first Angkorian capital, Hariharalaya. Bakong stands 15 meters tall and is 650x850m at the outer wall. Constructed by the third Angkorian-era king as his state-temple, Bakong represents the first application of the temple-mountain architectural formula on a grand scale and set the architectural tone for the next 400 years. The temple displays a very early use of stone rather than brick. Though begun by Indravarman I, Bakong received additions and was expanded by later kings. The uppermost section and tower may have been added as late as the 12th century AD. Some of the lintel carvings, particularly on the outer towers, are in very good shape. Picturesque moat and vegetation surround Bakong.

If you see only two temples, and Angkor Wat Bayon should be the ones. The giant stone faces of Bayon have become one of the most recognizable images connected to classic Khmer art and architecture. There are 37 standing towers, most but not all sporting four carved faces oriented toward the cardinal points. Who the faces represent is a matter of debate but they may be Loksvara, Mahayana Buddhism's compassionate Bodhisattva, or perhaps a combination of Buddha and Jayavarman VII. Bayon was the Jayavarman VII's state-temple and in many ways represents the pinnacle of his massive building campaign. It appears to be, and is to some degree, an architectural muddle, in part because it was constructed in a somewhat piecemeal fashion for over a century.

The best of Bayon are the bas-reliefs on the exterior walls of the lower level and on the upper level where the stone faces reside. The bas-reliefs on the southern wall contain real-life scenes from the historical sea battle between the Khmer and the Cham. It is not clear whether this represents the Cham invasion of 1177AD or a later battle in which the Khmer were victorious. Even more interesting are extensive carvings of unique and revealing scenes of everyday life that are interspersed among the battle scenes, including market scenes, cockfighting, chess games and childbirth. Also note the unfinished carvings on other walls, likely indicating the death of Jayavarman VII and the subsequent end of his building campaign. Some of the reliefs on the inner walls were carved at a later date under the Hindu king Jayavarman VIII. The surrounding tall jungle makes Bayon a bit dark and flat for photographs near sunrise and sunset..

But to day Siem Reap river is so polluted , its beauty had died, as the residential living along the river banks throw the rubbish , set up toilets and sewage into its river made its water turn so dirty and addition, some greedy families violated the land over the river banks making Siem Reap river getting smaller and smaller From this mishap, the Cambodia government plane to restore Siem Reap river back to its glory, as plan to make a charming garden on the both sides of river bank from Speak Neak of new hotel zone area to old market and continue to Chong Srok of phnom krom but the authority face a big challenge from the residential, as they don.t want move away from the river , although they live illegally on the public spots.

The oldest structure is the Wat Phnom from the founding days of the city, constructed in 1373. The main tourist attractions are the Royal Palace with the Silver Pagoda, which dates to the mid 1800s; the National Museum, constructed during the French colonial era in the late 1800s in the classical Khmer style hosts a vast collection of Khmer antiquities; the Independence Monument (Khmer: Vimean Akareach), although modern from the 1950s, is also constructed in the ancient Khmer style.

The French, who were the colonial masters from the 1800s to the 1940s, also left their mark, with various colonial villas, French churches, boulevards, and the Art deco market Phsar Thom Thmei. A notable landmark of the colonial era is the Hotel Le Royal.

Starting with independence from the French in the 1950s and lasting until the era of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s, Phnom Penh underwent tremendous growth as the capital city of a newly independent country. King Sihanouk was eager to present a new style of architecture and thus invigorate the process of nation building. A new golden era of architecture took off, with various projects and young Khmer architects, often educated in France, given opportunities to design and construct. This new movement was called "New Khmer Architecture" and was often characterised by a fusion of Bauhaus, European post-modern architecture, and traditional elements from Angkor. The most prominent architect was Vann Molyvann, who was nominated chief national architect by the king himself in 1956. Molyvann created landmark buildings such as the Preah Suramarit National Theatre and the Council of Ministers building, other architects helped construct the newly founded Royal Khmer University, the Institute of Foreign Languages and the National Sports Centre. With the growth of the upper and entrepreneurial middle class, new suburbs were built in the 1950s and 60's.

Although these buildings survived the Khmer Rouge era and the civil war, today they are under threat due to economic development and financial speculation. Villas and gardens from that era are being destroyed and redeveloped to make place for bigger structures. The landmark National Theatre by Molyvann was ripped down in 2008. A movement is rising in Cambodia to preserve this modernist heritage. Old villas are sometimes being converted into boutique hotels, such as the Knai Bang Chatt.

Monuments and memorials to the genocide during the Khmer Rouge era in the 1970s are the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (a former high school used as a concentration camp) and on the outskirt of the city the Choeung Ek Genocide Center. The Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument was commissioned by the Vietnamese communists as symbol of Khmer-Vietnamese "friendship" during the late 1970s following the liberation of Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge.

Phnom Penh from 1970 onward had not seen much developments due to the Cambodian civil war. The original population of Phnom Penh City of 900,000 had swelled to over 2,000,000 at the end of the war in 1975 because of war refugees from the countryside.
On the contrary, many infrastructures had been destroyed by fighting and shells. In 1973, the Khmer Rouge mined Chroy Changvar Bridge two times which eventually destroyed it.

There are not much records about the developments of Phnom Penh City during the reign of King Sisowath, except that the colonial administration had contracted the dredging of the Mekong and Sap rivers in order to facilitate marine navigation to enable ships and naval vessels to reach Phnom Penh. The records show that in 1914 the colonial administration had begun to expand the city to the west and to the south until Bassac river.

Phnom Penh city takes the name form the present Wat Phnom or Hill temple.Legend has it that in 1372 ,an old nun named Penh went to fetch the water in the Mekong river and found a dead koki tree floating down the stream .Inside the hole of the dead koki tree contained four bronze and one stone Buddha statues in it .
Daun (Gandma) Penh brought the statues ashore and ordered people to pile up earth at northeast of her house and used those Koki trunks to build a temple on that hill to house the five Buddha statues, then named the temple after her as Wat Phnom Daun Penh, which presently known as Wat Phnom, a small hill of 27 metres (89 ft) in height.

The city was originally called Phnom Daun Penh after it was founded, but it was later abbreviated to just Phnom Penh. The city was also previously known as Krong Chaktomuk meaning "City of Four Faces". This name refers to the junction where the Mekong, Bassac, and Tonle Sap rivers cross to form an "X" where the capital is situated.

Smile and Tear, the photo explain very well what I want to write in this post. I am not sure if the photo was taken naturally or fake up. The photo have been saved long time ago on my computer. I lost trace where I found it. If anyone know the source, you can drop a comment here.

I write this post after reading a few travel notes from the people that have been visited Cambodia. Most of them will never forget Cambodia. They found Cambodia has two faces: one is smile and happy, other is sad and complex.

Angkor Wat and S-21 are both the most famous sites to visit of Cambodia. One shown the talent, other shown the stupidity.

People are proud and exciting in visiting temples in Siem Reap. They all enjoyed the incredible Cambodian Art and Culture. It’s a glory and long history. Cambodia is famous and the was one time the most beautiful city in Asia.

Hidden behind the smile and the glory of those temples, Cambodia got a dark politic history. It’s the Khmer Rouge and Genocide. All the people, after visit S21 in Phnom Penh, they don’t have the same feeling. It’s something hard to explain.

It’s up to you to choose weather you go to Siem Reap and never back to Phnom Penh or you visit Phnom Penh first then back to Siem Reap or Sihanoukville.

You still can visit Phnom Penh without going to visit killing field. It’s your choice. Phnom Penh is a beautiful city. I live and work here and I won’t go anywhere else.

Everything is being recovered. Cambodia today got a future, and Cambodian people got hope in their heart and mind.

I just want to tell you that Cambodia got two faces. It’s true that you might feel that way. But the past is the past and don’t wait any longer, start packing and come to Cambodia. It would be an unique experience you should not miss.

Why is Khmer New Year in April?

Many Cambodians have a lot of freedom to celebrate multiple New Years. This includes the western New Year at the end of December, the Chinese New Year typically around February, and the Cambodian New Year in mid-April. The Cambodian New Year is one of the biggest celebrations for Cambodians. The celebration lasts for 3 days with activities ranging from traditional ceremonies at the temple to activities within the families and friends. It seems odd since the New Year's day is not the beginning of the year in the calendar they use including the Khmer lunar calendar. So most people even Cambodians ask why do Cambodians celebrate New Year in April?

A typical response is because Khmer farmers are done with the rice harvesting in April and have spare time to relax and celebrate. So the Khmer King in the Ankorian period chose this system. This explains the civic reason why we choose this April New Year system, but it does not answer why this system picks the New Year to be in April.

Some says that Khmer New Year calculation is based on the lunar calendar. This assumption is not correct since Khmer chankiteck calendar end the year in December or January. But I see why some make this conclusion since during the Khmer new year, Khmer lunar calendar increments the year, both the Buddhist Era and the animal year such as changing the animal from Ox to Tiger in April 2010.According to Zhou Daguan who is a Chinese traveler to Cambodia in the 13th century, Khmer celebrated New Year in the tenth month of the Chinese calendar. By using the computer to calculate the corresponding Khmer lunar month for that year, I found that it corresponds to the first month of Khmer lunar calendar in 1295, the year that he visited Cambodia. So Khmer used to celebrate New Year using the lunar calendar system.

Only at later part of the Ankorian period that Khmer changed the New Year to mid-April. By looking into other type of calendar, I found that Hindu calendar has their New Year or Songkran in April. Khmer has long history of adopting many customs from India including Buddhism. Thus, it is safe to conclude that we adopted this system for celebrating New Year.

The first day of Khmer New Year or Songkran is calculated based on the Reaseys. Reaseys are the divisions of the path of the Earth around the sun based on the star constellation. Mesa or April Reasey correponds to the Songkran star which is considered to be the star that divides the old year and the new year. When the earth first enters the Mesa Reasey, it is called Songkran (the first day of the New Year). It falls on April 13 or 14 of Gregorian calendar in recent years. Khmer Songkran calculation is different than the Hindu calculation. From my study, it varied between 10 to 70 minutes. The exact calculation of Khmer Songkran is done by Khmer Horas or astronomers. Khmer Hora such as Mr. Borin Im would publish the exact Songkran time which is believed to be the time that New Year angels make their procession down to Earth. He would describe the angel that represent the year with other predictions related to the Khmer New Year customs.

LONG BEACH — The multicultural melange that is the Cambodian New Year parade set off on its sixth annual trip down Anaheim Street Sunday morning to a large and appreciative crowd.

The number of parade participants was down for a second straight year, possibly due in part to the economy or this year's date coinciding with Easter. Some of the Christian, Latino and interfaith organizations were not on hand this time around.

However, the crowd was at least as large and enthusiastic as in prior years and the spirit of the event was equally buoyant.

And, as seems to be tradition with the event, the grim-looking morning clouds seemed to disperse on cue with the 10:14 a.m. parade start from Junipero Avenue.

Among the honored guests at the parade was Cambodian Ambassador to the United States Hem Heng, who was making his first trip to the Long Beach event.

"As a Cambodian, it makes me very proud," Heng said. "It is an indication of the prestige of the Cambodian-American people in Long Beach.

"Also this parade can make others know better the Cambodian people."

Heng said having Cambodians stage an all-American event such as a parade, which is unknown in Cambodia, was a fitting way for cultures to mix and interact.

As always, a wide range of ethnic, cultural and social organizations, clubs and groups were on hand. They ranged from a variety of Khmer youth and arts groups, to a large contingent of Hmong, to police, a fire engine, politicians, civil leaders and two guys in kilts.

One of those kilted guys was Peter Joseph, the co-owner of the Big Red Bus, which was ferrying members of the United Cambodian Community down Anaheim.

Asked about his attire, Joseph said, "We wear these everywhere we go.

"It's just how we roll."

All through the parade route and throughout the day snapshots of the mixing of cultures were evident:

Where to visit in Siem Reap?
Siem Reap (ខេត្តសៀមរាប) is a little but fast growing city, located on the north eastern side of the Tonle Sap Lake (បឹងទន្លេរសាប), Cambodia (ប្រទេសកម្ពុជា). The main reason that makes this city growing so fast is, this city is the main access for whoever want to visit Angkor Wat (អង្គរវត្ត). Cambodia is a hot country for travelers nowadays, and Siem Reap is hottest than ever. The center remains quite a bit a rural old town, with french style houses and shops. But what you notice now when you walk 5 minutes in the center is the impressive amounts of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and bars of every kind, shape and dimension. Some of them are new and cleaned, some others not. These 2 dimensions, these 2 souls of Siem Reap make this city an explosive mix. The area around the old market is crowded with locals and foreigners all day long. A few steps far, and you are in the middle of the bars area, where the fun lasts till the sun shines again.

In the center is located the Tourism Office, but it seems that the best way to get info is to ask to your Hotel or guesthouse. You can make international calls straightforward. You can find many internet coffee with international calling services. The quality of the internet connection is often acceptable (you can view this website) but considerably slower then the western standards. The quality of the voice communication can be a problem, especially for overseas calls. You can find better quality connections simply "renting" a mobile phone on the street. There are a few phone booths around the old market, where they also sell international phone cards.

Money: you can pay everywhere both in US dollars or Cambodian Riel (r). You can exchange your money in dollars or Riel in the markets or in one of the many banks, all locate in the old market area (Psar Chaa), like Mekong Bank, Canadia Bank, Cambodia Asia Bank and others. Expect to pay a commission around 2%. 1$ is about 4000r.

Books and guides about Cambodia, its history and Angkor can be bought everywhere, but it can be nice to buy from one of the many kids selling them on the street. The are many free mini-guides and flyers about Siem Reap, giving information about hotels, restaurants, pubs and events. One of the best is The Siem Reap Angor Visitors Guide, usually coming out quarterly. These publications exist thanks to the advertisers, that are hotels, restaurants and so on. Consider this also when you read them.

It can happen that you get sick, or have an accident, little or big: for these cases, Angkor have 2 main hospitals, one for children and one for adult, but if anybody get seriously sick, it's better to move it to Bangkok, as the medical standards are not properly high, and there is the risk to be more sick.

On the streets there are many beggars. If you know just a little little bit of Cambodian history, you can recognize many of them as victims of land mines. In this country there is no social security network and the government doesn't support them. Be also aware that when you start to give, you will often have many more asking around you. If you want to be generous do it with discretion.

The people in Siem Reap are really warm and friendly: if you smile back it will be greatly appreciated. Be patient while waiting for your food and your drink, it may take a long time. And Khmer food taste delicious, so it fully worth the wait!!!

The Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach) in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, was built in 1958 following the country's independence from France. The khim ( Khmer: ឃឹម; pronounced "kim," ) is a hammered dulcimer from Cambodia. It is made of wood and trapezoidal in shape, with brass strings that are laid across the instrument. There are 14 groups of strings on the khim, and each group has 3 strings. Overall, the khim has a total of 42 strings. It is played with two flexible bamboo sticks with soft leather at the tips to produce the soft tone. It is used as both a solo and ensemble instrument.

The instrument was introduced to Cambodia where a similar (though, since the late 20th century, usually larger) instrument is called yangqin; the khim produces a significantly softer sound. Traditional khims have two bridges, though in the late 20th century some players began using larger instruments with more bridges.

The Australian-born musician and vocal artist Lisa Gerrard specialises in the use of a khim hammered dulcimer, featuring its music on several albums and performing with the instrument live on tour.

The Khmer alphabet has fewer symbols for vowels than the language has vowel phonemes. Therefore, most vowel signs have two possible pronunciations, depending on which series the consonant belongs to. When no vowel sign is present, usually the inherent vowel of the consonant is used. Vowels signs can be divided into two groups: dependent vowel signs, which are written around a consonant letter, and independent vowel letters, which can stand alone. Dependent vowel signs are used more frequently than independent vowels and all independent vowel letters can be phonetically rendered with a dependent vowel. Khmer also has a number of diacritics, which can change the series of the consonant or change the pronunciation of the vowel. Its directionality is horizontal left-to-right, like the Latin alphabet.

The Tonlé Sap (Khmer: ទន្លេសាប;), i.e., large body of water (Cambodian meaning "Large Fresh Water River," but more commonly translated as "Great Lake") is a combined lake and river system of huge importance to Cambodia. It is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and is an ecological hot spot that was designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997.

The Tonlé Sap is unusual for two reasons: 1) its flow changes direction twice a year, and 2) the portion that forms the lake expands and shrinks dramatically with the seasons. 1- គោព្រៃ= Kouprey (Bos sauveli): The National Mammal of the Kingdom of Cambodia

The Kouprey, an original Khmer species, has been recognized worldwide and named in Khmer version by international biologists even though English, Spanish and French call it Kouprey. Its scientific name is “Bos sauveli” with a size: HB: 2100mm-2300mm; H: 1700mm-1900mm and W: 700-900 kg. The Kouprey is similar to the gaur or banteng but they are unique in having a very long dewlap hanging from the neck, in old males almost reaching the ground. The bull and cow horns are distinctly different. In the bull Kouprey, the horns have cores which are closer together and considerably larger; the horns form a convex curve for the basal half of the horns, dropping below the base, then rising upward and forward, extending slightly above the head with split at the tips. The horns in the female are lyre-shaped, corkscrewing upward, the tips are never shredded, and the cores are thinner and farther apart than in the male. The lower legs of the Kouprey are white or grayish and dark grayish at old age. In the pre-war period, hunting of the Kouprey was prohibited by declaration No. 191 dated January 20, 1960. After the Pol Pot regime, hunting was again prohibited by declaration No. 359 dated August 01, 1994, issued by Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries. Kouprey was classified as a critical endangered species according to the IUCN Red List. International Trade of this species is banned, following Appendix I of the CITES Convention and Migratory Species Convention.

In the 1960s, the King of Cambodia identified and declared the Kouprey as the Cambodia natural heritage symbol. It has been written about in popular Khmer songs, especially some melodies, describing the richness of nature and the important of comparability of human, animals, and nature for peace and prosperity. Kouprey were often found in herds of 20 or more and also found with gaur, banteng or sambar deer. They are more intelligent, more industrious and more easily frightened than other species in their family and they are strong, agile, and good at smelling and fast moving. Kouprey can tolerate sunlight, low quality food and Bovine Spongiform Encephalop Pathy (SBP) diseases.

The Khmer common name is “Tror Yorng or Kangor Yak or Aov Loeuk”. The scientific name is “Pseudibis gigantea” and English common name is “Giant Ibis”. Giant Ibis has dark grey-brown plumage, light red legs, curved downward bill and 104cm in body length. Hunting of Giant Ibis was prohibited by declaration No.359 dated August 01, 1994 issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It was classified as a critical endangered species according to the IUCN Red List. Giant Ibis is one of the species that in the past distributed almost throughout Southeast Asia, but at present tine it can only find in the North and Northeast parts of Cambodia. It has been written about in popular Khmer songs and Khmer traditional tales. Cambodia people had believed that Giant Ibis is very intelligent, if a fail hunting on them in any places, they will never come to those places for ever. Their bloods were traditionally used for malaria treatment in the isolated villages. It is a popular bird, people like them a lots, especially it’s morning calls that connected to the heart of Cambodian farmers for love introduction as well as for remaining that it is time for going to the fields.

IF you want to help save the planet from carbon carnage, cut your Google searches, scientists say.

Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea, according to new research, The Australian reports.

While millions of people tap into Google without a thought for the environment, a typical search generates about 7g of CO2. Boiling a kettle generates about 15g.

“Google operates huge data centres around the world that consume a great deal of power,” said Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist whose research on the environmental impact of computing is due out soon.

“A Google search has a definite environmental impact.”

Survey Asks: Internet Access or Sex?

Intel came up with a novel way to show how important the Internet and computing have become in the lives of Americans. In conjunction with Harris Interactive, the company conducted a survey of adults in the United States under the prosaic banner “Internet Reliance in Today’s Economy.”

But the first “key finding” from the study is a little more attention-grabbing. According to the study, 46 percent of women and 30 percent of men would opt to forgo sex for two weeks rather than give up access to their precious Internet for the same period.

More broadly, those surveyed said access to the Internet ranked highest among the discretionary spending items they could not live without. Cable television, dining out, shopping for clothes and gym memberships followed in declining importance.

Along similar lines, 61 percent of the women surveyed said they would rather go without TV for two weeks than lose access to the Internet for one week.

Using the data as a means of pitching products fueled by Intel chips, the company said: “The survey revealed that 65 percent of adults feel they cannot live without Internet access, and even more — 71 percent — responded that it is important or very important to have Internet-enabled devices, such as laptops, netbooks and mobile Internet devices that can provide them with real-time updates on important issues including the state of the economy.”

Harris Interactive polled 2,119 adults on Intel’s behalf.

Koulen is a town in northern Cambodia.

Koulen Mountain(Khmer: ភ្នំគូលេន) locates at Districts of Svay Len and Va Rin in 48-kilometer distance from the provincial town of Siem Reap by Short-cut or in 50-kilometer distance from the provincial town of Siem Reap via Charles De Gaulle Road, small circle, big circle, Preah Dak, Road A66, then turning to the Malaysian Developed Road. At the mountain of Ku Len, tourists can visit such places as follows:

CHUP PREAH: Is the plain spot where having cool water flows and locates at the mountain’s valley. Next to it, there is a rare-big tree of Cham Pa having 0.7-meter diameter and 15-meter height. At Chup Preah, there is a big Buddhist statue and many other small statues made during 16th century.
LINGA 1,000: Locates on the mountain, along the river of Siem Reap and has a lot of figures of Yoni and Linga spreading out at the bottom of the river.

TERRACE OF SDACH KUM LING: Is the plain terrace having a small ruined temple made of solid brick at the middle; the study proves that the terrace covered by lava for hundreds years.

PREAH ANG THOM: Is a big statue of Buddhist who had achieved nirvana; the statue built in 16th century has eight-meter length living on a big rock. Preah Ang Thom is the sacred and worshipping god for Ku Len Mountain. There are also two big trees of Cham Pa at nearby. Besides Preah Ang Thom, we have seen Chhok Ruot, footprint of Preah Bat Choan Tuk, Peung Chhok, Peung Ey So and Peung Ey Sey.

WATERFALL: At Ku Len Mountain, there are two spots of waterfall. First Waterfall: Has four-meter to five-meter heights and 20-meter to 25-meter diameters during the dry and rainy seasons respectfully. Second Waterfall: Has 15-20-meter heights and 10-15-meter diameters during the dry and rainy seasons respectfully.
